Summer Weekend Meals for Kids
When School Ends, Hunger Doesn't
For many children in Campbell County, school meals are the most reliable source of nutrition. When summer break arrives, that support disappears, and families must stretch already limited resources to fill that gap on their own.
That's where you come in. Through our Summer Weekend Meals for Kids program, we provide 200 to 250 children with nutritious, kid-friendly food bags during the summer break. Each bag contains enough food for two full days, ensuring no child goes hungry on the weekend.
How It Works
10 Bags Covering 11 Weekends
Summer break is 11 weeks long (June through August). We distribute food bags 10 weeks throughout the summer, with the final bag being a double bag that provides enough food for two weekends, ensuring children have weekend meals for the entire summer break.
Who Qualifies
Families enroll through our eight trusted partner organizations across Campbell County. Our partners work directly with families who need support and determine eligibility based on their established criteria. We don't income-qualify families ourselves. We trust our partners to identify the children who need these meals most.
When a partner tells us they need bags for 100 kids, we provide exactly that. Our goal is simple: meet the full need, no waiting lists, no gaps.
What's in Each Bag
Each bag provides the equivalent of two breakfasts, two lunches, two dinners, and two snacks, with protein, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, and kid-friendly, shelf-stable foods children can enjoy all weekend.

Weekend food bags are guided by USDA meal pattern recommendations, while recognizing the practical limits of shelf-stable, take-home food programs.
With just $8, you can help a child enjoy filling and balanced meals all weekend. Give today.

What Our Partners Are Saying
"The Summer Weekend Meals for Kids program has been a tremendous support for the families we serve at the Boys and Girls Club. Currently, across our six locations, we have 560 active members this year, seeing an average of 220 members each day, and 88 of those families are on scholarship. Knowing their children will have reliable food beyond our program hours eases a huge burden for caregivers who are working hard to support their families. For some parents, you can see the relief immediately. One mom's shoulders literally drop when she sees the food bags coming out."
- Brittney Locken, Executive Director, Boys and Girls Club of Campbell County
"The Edible Prairie Project supported our community with food for children in low-income families over the summer, and for the SNAP shutdown. The delight these gifts are met with is awesome to see. Parents breathe a sigh of relief, and the children (elementary aged) peer into the bags like they've found treasure! EPP shares smiles throughout the community!"
- Gail Dunkle, Executive Director, Wright Community Assistance
