Growing fresh food and making it accessible to more Campbell County families

For 10 weeks this summer, the Edible Prairie Project’s Veggie Basket program connected Campbell County families with fresh, locally grown produce while making that food more accessible to our neighbors in need.

This summer, 37 families participated, with 23 families receiving free baskets through SNAP/WIC and 3 baskets offered at a discounted rate to households whose income fell below the self-sufficiency standard but who did not qualify for federal nutrition assistance. The remaining 11 families purchased retail baskets, helping support the free and discounted baskets offered to their neighbors.

Together, participating families took home 3,000+ pounds of fresh produce, and 90% of that food was grown right here by the Edible Prairie Project team. SNAP/WIC families also received locally raised meat and eggs through our Protein from the Prairie program, along with kitchen utensils to help them prepare and store their fresh produce at home.

This is what your support makes possible: food grown here, shared with our neighbors, and made accessible to families who might otherwise have more limited access to fresh, locally grown food.

And we’re not done yet. Our fall Veggie Basket season begins in October, continuing our work to make fresh, locally grown food more accessible throughout the year.
